Destination Roulette – Texas Border States

If you’re starting point for your next vacation is Texas and you’re not sure where you want to go, try this. Write the names of the bordering possibilities – Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Mexico – on Popsicle sticks. Have someone hold the sticks so you can’t see the names and draw. Before selecting, decide if the first stick you pick or the last stick standing is your next destination.
Spend time in New Orleans at the French Quarter, visiting historic buildings, galleries, and museums, while dining, observing artists, and sampling fresh beignets. Time your trip during Mardi Gras if you can.
In the northern region there’s boating and fishing, riverboat casinos in Shreveport, and area festivals.
Plantation Country features a step back in time along the Mississippi River and a look at 8 remaining sugar plantations like Evergreen Plantation and Oak Alley.
Just a few of the year-round attractions include Crater of Diamonds State Park, Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park, Hot Springs National Park, and Bull Shoals-White River State Park.
Family-fun waterparks include Willow Springs Water Park, Wild River Country, Magic Springs, and Crystal Falls in addition to museums, Garvan Woodland Gardens, and Little Rock Zoo.
Eureka Springs is an interesting town to visit. Also keep in mind the Ozark Mountains and the fall foliage this time of year.
Oklahoma has something for everyone, from casinos to waterparks. Kids will enjoy the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden, Tulsa Zoo, and the Oklahoma Aquarium.
For the adventurous, ride a roller coaster at amusement parks, go parasailing on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, or go hiking at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.
New Mexico
Year round activities include visiting Pecos National Historical Park, Georgia O’Keefe Museum, San Miguel Mission, Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, and Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
See the sights from the Sandia Peak Tramway and check out the Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Zoo, and Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park. Western Playland amusement park keeps kids happy while adults play at the Hard Rock Casino in Albuquerque.
You’re just a hop and a skip from south of the border and its diverse environment of entertainment, culture, and authentic Mexican cuisine. (Check with the United States State Department for travel restrictions)
