Hydraulic Systems How They Work

Hydraulic systems are used in many types of machinery, including heavy construction equipment and industrial equipment, for their power and reliability. Hydraulic systems are based on a simple theory: fluids can be used to transmit and multiply movement and force. When force or pressure is applied at a given point to a confined, non-compressible fluid, the force is transmitted equally through the hydraulic system to create an output force at the other end. Hydraulic fluids must be non-compressible at expected temperatures to transmit force from one end of the system to the other while lubricating internal parts. If a fluid were to compress, force would be lost. 
Hydraulic systems create an inherently high-pressure, high-temperature environment conducive to the formation of varnish and sludge, which cause operational issues such as sticking valves. High temperatures also cause some hydraulic oils to thin out, leaving inadequate oil thickness to protect against wear.
