Camper History

Campers have been around in some form or another for quite some time. While covered wagons might technically count, the first modern campers (those with modern sensibilities and amenities in mind) are a little more recent.
Campers, known by various names (such as camper vans, caravans, motorhome and, of course, RV or recreational vehicle). In the United States, RVs had their advent fairly soon after the automobile. It didn’t take long for innovators to realize that you could build a house on wheels if you were creative enough. These initial companies usually called these novelties house trailers or trailer coaches. Many of these early campers were manufactured by small businesses, sometimes out of garages or backyards. One of these early ones is still around. You may have heard of it… Airstream. These early campers were primitive by today’s standard (generally little more than spaces to lay out to sleep with maybe a rudimentary cooking area) but were cutting edge for the time.
It wasn’t until the 1950s that self-contained motorhomes were developed, which had their own onboard engines and didn’t need towing vehicles.

Equipment Care for Hard Winter

Prepare Equipment for Tough Winter Temperatures

Prepare Equipment for Tough Winter
The fall months are the time to place boats, motorcycles and lawn care equipment into storage and prepare snowmobiles, snowblowers, and other vehicles for the coming winter.
AMSOIL products are formulated to provide maximum protection for engines and fuel systems during storage, while AMSOIL synthetic motor oils’ low pour points provide superior cold-temperature protection and performance in two- and four-stroke winter equipment.

Fall Storage Protection

Gasoline can break down in as little as 60 days, causing varnish and gums that clog injectors, fuel lines, and carburetors, leading to poor engine performance and starting problems. In many applications, draining the fuel system can be impractical, and doing so can expose the system to corrosion on the bare metal in the tank and fuel system and cause gasket and seal cracking.
StabilizerAMSOIL Gasoline Stabilizer reduces the oxidation that occurs when fuel is stored for extended periods, improving performance, extending equipment life and decreasing maintenance expenses.
During storage, fluctuations in ambient temperatures can form condensation within the engine that can cause surface corrosion on cylinder liners, piston rings, anti-friction bearings and steel/iron contact surfaces on rotational seals. Long periods of storage can also dry out cylinders, often resulting in permanent damage when the equipment is dry-started in the spring.
AMSOIL Engine Fogging Oil offers superior film retention, providing long-term protection against corrosion and dry starts, extending engine life and reducing operating expenses. Its aerosol spray formulation offers easy and clean application while reaching more components and offering complete distribution of the oil, something especially beneficial in applications with horizontal cylinder orientation, such as outboard motors.

Winter Four-Stroke Performance

4-StrokeConventional oils thicken in the cold, which can result in inadequate lubrication to critical engine parts at cold start-up, or even prevent the engine from starting.

AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke® Power Sports Synthetic Motor Oil provides serious protection and performance in four-stroke engines, including ATVs and snowmobiles. Its broad 0W-40 viscosity rating effectively protects in both hot and cold temperature extremes.
AMSOIL Formula 4-Stroke® Synthetic Small Engine Oil provides exceptional protection in the severe service conditions common in both gasoline- and diesel-fueled small engines, including welders, skid steers, compressors, snow blowers and more. It remains fluid at subzero temperatures for superior cold-weather protection.

Winter Two-Stroke Performance

InterceptorAMSOIL DOMINATOR® and INTERCEPTOR® Synthetic 2-Stroke Oils provide exceptional performance in snowmobiles and other two-stroke equipment. AMSOIL DOMINATOR is formulated with heavier base oils for “on the edge” operation, while also protecting pistons and bearings subjected to the rigors of extreme riding. AMSOIL INTERCEPTOR is engineered specifically for power sports applications and engines equipped with exhaust power valves. It contains the finest synthetic base oils and additives for exceptional cleanliness while controlling exhaust valve sticking and providing outstanding overall lubrication.

Gasoline Additive

QuickshotAMSOIL Quickshot® is formulated to thoroughly clean varnish, gums, and insoluble debris in two- and four-stroke gasoline-powered small engines and power sports equipment fuel systems, restoring peak performance. It effectively addresses performance issues related to ethanol, water, and dirty pump gas, while stabilizing fuel between uses and during short-term storage periods.

Maintaining Your Snowblower

Snowblower maintenance can be distilled to one Golden Rule: Maintain your fuel system.
A snowblower that refuses to start is almost always due to a fuel problem. Preventing fuel-system problems starts in the spring prior to storage.
amsoil dealer

Leave the carburetor full of gas
One theory says that shutting off the fuel line and running the engine until the carburetor empties helps prevent varnish that plugs the jets and prevents starting.
However, leaving the carburetor empty and exposed to air hastens oxidation and varnish. Fluctuating temperatures and humidity throughout the summer invite varnish, and it doesn’t take much to plug the tiny orifices in a carburetor.
Instead, add fuel stabilizer at the end of the season, run the engine for a few minutes to distribute the treated gas throughout the system, then shut down the engine. Now you can shut off the fuel line for the summer. The treated fuel in the carburetor bowl provides protection and helps keep components clean.
Some claim you should run the carburetor empty since the gas will evaporate anyway. That may be true, but evaporation takes time, and the carburetor will at least be protected in the intervening months.
Stabilize the gas
As mentioned, treat gas with stabilizer prior to storage. Stabilized fuel protects against oxidation and varnish throughout the summer.
Use ethanol-free gas
When water infiltrates your gas tank in the form of melted snow, it can cause phase separation, a phenomenon that occurs when the bond between ethanol (present in most gasoline sold today) and gasoline breaks. When this ethanol/water mixture enters the combustion chamber, it creates a lean-burn situation that can damage your engine.
For best performance, use 91-octane, non-oxygenated (ethanol-free) gas. Many gas stations offer non-oxygenated gas and advertise it for power sports and off-road use. It’s a little more expensive, but spending a few extra dollars a winter to help keep your $1,000 dollar machine running strong is a reasonable investment. At the very least, use ethanol-free gas during storage to help ward off phase separation.
If you use ethanol-blended gas, use AMSOIL Quickshot with every tank of gas, which is formulated to address ethanol-related performance issues.
Change the oil in the spring
Used oil contains acids that can slowly corrode metal components. Prior to storage, change the oil to remove acidic byproducts and ensure maximum protection throughout the summer. After changing oil, run the engine for a couple minutes to distribute oil throughout the lower end of the engine.
Fog the engine
Use fogging oil to protect the upper end (cylinder, piston, valves) from corrosion during storage. Remove the spark plug, which provides the perfect time to inspect its condition, and spray a little oil into the cylinder. Slowly pull the starter cord a few times to distribute the oil, then replace the plug.
Check the gear housing
Clean any debris from around the filler port on the auger gear housing, remove the plug and ensure the gear lube level is up to the top. If not, add the correct lubricant (check your owner’s manual for viscosity).
Inspect belt condition and linkages
Stressing a worn belt after it’s sat idle for months is a recipe for a breakdown. When a belt does break, it’s often while clearing the first big snowfall of the year. Spring is the prime time to check the condition of drive belts and linkages. It’s much easier and far more comfortable to inspect and replace belts on a mild, dry spring day than following a breakdown in the winter.
Finally, keep an eye on the weather at the start of winter. When the forecast calls for the first snowstorm of the season, start your snowblower a few days early to ensure it’s ready to go.

Road Trips for the Holiday Drive Safe

Taking the holidays on the road is one of the many conveniences of owning an RV. No need to tie yourself down to one place — with just a little planning and precaution, you’ll find that celebrating from the road is one of the best holiday experiences you can have. We’ll assume you have some idea of where you’ll be going, so we’ll focus on getting you there safely and giving you ideas on how to pull off that perfect holiday meal from your RV’s kitchen.
driving in winter

Getting Where You’re Going Safely

First things first — getting to wherever you’re going safely.
Why Holiday Driving can be Dangerous
Any time traffic increases, whether because of a holiday or special event, the chances of having an accident increase. More people are on the road, which means that tempers could be running short. Also, more people are out celebrating at night – and some of those people may not have the good sense to find someone else to drive after they’ve imbibed just a tad too much.
Safe Travel Tips
Regardless of the time of night or day, you should always keep your eye out for erratic drivers. Watching at least 100 feet in front of you helps you to see someone coming at you – possibly in the wrong lane – a little quicker, which may give you those few extra seconds you need to get out of the way.
When following someone, even on the highway, stay at least four or five car lengths behind, which is more than average, but you’re in an RV after all. On surface roads, you should stay at least one car length for every 10 mph behind the person in front of you. If someone has to stop fast or swerves to miss someone or something in the road, you’ll ram right into them if you are too close. While it’s tempting to try to “rush” the person in front of you, especially when he or she may be doing under the speed limit, be patient until it’s safe to pass.
If the weather is bad – whether it’s rain, fog, a mix of precipitation, or snow, drive slower. That means leaving earlier so that you reach your destination safe and on time. Even rain decreases the distance you can see in front of you. Furthermore, roads are slippery when they are wet – and in the case where it’s near freezing, can ice over with “black ice,” a sheet of ice that is clear. You can’t tell that from non-iced roads.

Idling your Engine for Extended Periods

Engine idling is often unavoidable during day-to-day vehicle operation. Whether it’s sitting in traffic or waiting in the school parking lot, excessive idling creates engine wear without advancing the odometer.
The service life of a motor oil is described in miles; however, it is greatly affected by a vehicle’s operating conditions. This is why AMSOIL provides definitions for normal and severe service. Commercial and fleet vehicles are automatically included in the severe service category due to the nature of their operating conditions. Vehicles that frequently tow, haul, and plow are obvious candidates for the category, but excessive idling is often overlooked.
The detrimental effects of high idle-times are numerous:
  • Decreased fuel economy
  • Incomplete fuel combustion, leading to fuel dilution and lowered oil viscosity, additive concentration and oil pressure – all of which increase the risk of wear
  • Increased oil consumption
  • Compromised injector tips, turbochargers and valve seats (diesel engines)

AMSOIL Signature Series Motor Oil represents the pinnacle of oil formulation, but all oils eventually lose their ability to provide proper lubrication and component protection. We recommend changing Signature Series Synthetic Motor Oil after 700-hours of operation in addition to the other established guidelines.
This graph illustrates the importance of tracking both mileage and idle-time. It shows the hours of engine operation, or idle-time, versus the miles driven during a drain interval. The colored lines represent average speeds of a vehicle in four different scenarios.
Following the orange line in the graph shows that the Las Vegas taxi accumulated approximately 10,000 miles before reaching the 700-hour mark. It operated for the same amount of time as the New York City taxi but traveled twice the miles. This is a clear example of how the hour limitation can significantly impact the number of miles achieved during a drain interval.
Signature Series Motor Oil counteracts some of the effects of prolonged idling by preventing deposits and resisting oil volatility (burn-off). Its unique synthetic formulation maximizes energy efficiency for optimum fuel economy.
It is vital to install a quality motor oil in your vehicle and maintain an accurate log of both mileage and hours of engine operation. Combining Signature Series Motor Oil with the appropriate drain interval will help prevent engine wear and costly repairs.
